I began this series of paintings in early 2007, in response to the general deterioration of the state of the world under the Bush administration. The paintings were to be loosely based on Thomas Cole's The Course of Empire cycle. My hope was to complete the series by January 20, 2009. However in the fall of 2007 my attention shifted to an offshoot project, The Triumph of Democracy, a large painting now on public view at 2101 L Street in Washington D.C. The paintings below are studies for larger works that remain unfinished. As Triumph consumed my attention (a painting based heavily on Cole's Consummation), the Bush years passed into history, and new projects began to brew, my focus on this work gradually waned. At this time I am unsure if I will return to the unfinished paintings still in the studio.
